Preparing Scrap Materials for Collection and Recycling

A checklist for getting scrap ready before it is collected or delivered.

A little preparation makes any scrap handover smoother. Use this checklist before you contact a scrap trader.

1. Identify what you have

List the main materials — steel, aluminium, copper, brass, stainless, mixed — and note anything you are unsure about.

2. Separate by material

Keep different metals apart where practical. Even a rough separation helps.

3. Remove contamination

Strip away plastic, wood, rubber and general waste where it is safe and practical to do so.

4. Remove hazardous items

Drain fluids, and arrange appropriate handling for refrigerants, batteries, gas cylinders and chemicals before metal is handed over.

5. Estimate the quantity

An approximate weight, volume or number of items helps the scrap trader plan.

6. Take photos

Clear photos of the material and its location speed up the conversation.

7. Check access

If collection is being discussed, note access conditions such as vehicle access, loading equipment and timing restrictions.

8. Get in touch

Share the information above when you call or submit an inquiry.
